Barrett Summer Scholars

Summer Scholars

Mission
Barrett Summer Scholars provides an opportunity for Arizona middle school age gifted students to live a university-like experience with a curriculum for academic enrichment while learning about academic programs and services available at Arizona State University.

A Unique Academic Experience
Barrett Summer Scholars begins with a residential experience for Arizona's most gifted students. Students will enroll in rigorous Summer Scholars courses, live on campus, and engage in academic-related activities including lectures and field trips.

Continued Connections
Barrett Summer Scholars maintains connections with participants beyond the initial summer experience. Activities include a Shadow My RA event that allows former participants to join their former resident advisors from the program in class and around campus and the ASU Homecoming FestDevil. Additionally, participants are invited to the Flinn Foundation Centennial Lectures and Rhodes Lectures, both hosted by Barrett The Honors College, which include a personal reception and presentation by speakers such as Jules Feiffer, Aaron Brown, Anna Quindlen, Eric Schlosser and Leonard Downie, Jr.

Feedback from Previous Summer Experience
Many participants commented on their experience in BSS:

  • BSS is an awesome program! It's like a test-run of college. You get to meet new people, experience new things, and learn- all while having fun. I would just like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to come to this camp. I had so much fun and learned so many things. If you had programs all the way up to my senior year in high school I would definitely come back. It's an amazing program and I am so glad I was part of it. - E. Crow
  • It is a great chance to learn new things, totally unlike any other camp I've ever attended. Living on a college campus, taking a college class (Human Event), being taught by young, engaging college students, and even eating the same food that college kids do all added to the experience. - K. Biegel
  • My favorite presentation was about BHC. I learned a lot of choices that I have as I get older, and what I should do in order to be accepted into Barrett's Honors College. They gave us helpful hand-outs that are going to be helpful as I become closer to graduating. - S. Parrish
  • My most memorable experience would be during my final project for Mock Trial that was so fun. I never knew I had enough courage to do something like that in front of people. It felt very good knowing that they think I did my part in a professional way. That was the best part. - T. Young
  • My most memorable experience at BSS would have to be the RA's. I'm sure that I will remember them for a long time to come. They reserved as great friends and resources for questions and doubts; they were very helpful. - D. Yañez
