Barrett Summer Scholars Academic Curriculum
The following non-college credit course topics will be offered during the 2009 program. Applicants may choose an elective course. As space is limited in each class, participants may be placed in one of their top three choices. Titles and descriptions are listed on the application packet.
1 Week, 7th grade Courses
Participants chose one:
Math in Economics
Math in Linearity
Math in Real Applications
Math & Biology in Forensics
1 Week, 7th grade Logic & Debate Course
All students will take this critical thinking course.
Students will learn to recognize informal fallacies, basic logical arguments and uses of reasoning. This includes examining assumptions and evaluating evidence and ideas.
3 Week, 8th & 9th grade Elective Courses
Participants chose one:
Health Care
Engineering
Jury Trial
Sustainability
Journalism
3 Week, 8th & 9th grade The Human Event Course
All students will take this unique BHC course.
This course teaches students to think critically by reviewing and discussing literature from historical and contemporary philosophers with different view points. The Human Event course offered for BSS was condensed to a three-week course and modified to meet the interest of a younger population.
Participants will be evaluated by instructors during the program and will receive a copy of their evaluation after the program.
Participants also visit a number of academic facilities at ASU's campuses in each program every year.
